Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum) is an herb that has been used for thousands of years to treat various ailments and afflictions. The herb is a tall, stocky, plant that grows fruit, and is native to the Mediterranean. The seeds of the dried flower are used. Milk thistle's active ingredient is a flavonoid called Silymarin, an antioxidant said to protect liver cells from toxins. Sylimarin apparently promotes liver cell protein synthesis and decreases the oxidation of glutathione.
