Omega 3's and fish oil are not a new concept in terms of maintaining health and well being; however they have recently become a headline supplement with regards to preventing a wide range of health issues such as heart attacks, high blood pressure and chronic inflammation.
Omega 3s are in a group called polyunsaturated fats; also included in this are Omega 6s. Possibly the most important omega 3s are EPA and DHA which are derived from alpha linoic acid (ALA). ALA can be obtained through ones diet but the conversion process is very inefficient meaning supplementation with fish oils to obtain these two essential fatty acids is ideal.
The ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 that we consume through foods should be around 1:2, but with the large amount of Omega 6 in today's diets the average ratio is now above 1:8. With the Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio out of kilter, almost every area of the body has an increased susceptibility to problems.
