Acetyl L-carnitine (ALCAR) is derived from the amino acids lysine and methionine. It is mainly synthesised in the liver and kidneys and must be transported for use to other tissues in the body. It is found in highest levels in tissues that use fatty acids as the main fuel; for example the skeletal and cardiac muscles.
In more detail
L-carnitine and Acetyl L-carnitine have backed claims of anti-aging and nutrient regenerating properties and the effects of supplementing with them have been extensively researched in many areas including exercise performance, weight loss, treatment of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's, diabetic depression and many other neurological disorders. Even at higher than recommended doses L-carnitine has no known side-effects and is well known to be a safe supplement to use.
