Antioxidants are one of the most brilliant supplements in terms of their relevance to almost everyone, not just top sports people. Antioxidants are contained in many fruit and vegetables, however, the processing that much of our food goes through and various other factors that lower the quality of food mean it is often more effective to supplement with antioxidants.
When the body uses the oxygen in the air to produce energy, free radicals are produced. These free radicals exist within our bodies and can be harmful to various tissues. Antioxidants are a group of organic substances that "mop up" free radicals which in turn plays a large role in preventing cancer, heart disease, and strokes. Other contributing factors that make antioxidant use necessary are the exposure to pollution, cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes, and other harmful environmental toxins.
The need for antioxidants is of special concern to those who are very active through daily activity and exercise. The need for extra energy through this activity leads to an enhanced need for antioxidants to counteract the subsequent rise in free radicals.
