Overview

Pea Protein Isolate (PPI) is a natural vegetable based protein which offers an excellent nutritional and amino acid profile. Completely free of gluten, lactose, cholesterol and other anti-nutritional factors, this is a great source of protein for those with certain food intolerances.

Pea Protein Isolate is absorbed relatively slowly by the digestive system when compared to other protein sources such as whey protein. This provides your body with a more sustained supply of amino acids and nutrients, making it ideal for consumption throughout the day. Pea Protein Isolate is concentrated to around 85% protein per serving, providing a great source of protein and amino acids especially when combined with other protein sources. It is partcularly high in the Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) and Arginine.

Pea Protein Isolate is ideal for vegans as it is sourced entirely from the yellow pea.

The amino acid profile can be found at the bottom of the page under 'Certificates'.

    Rice Protein and cup-a-soups

Add this to Rice Protein to make sure you get the maximum benefits... I mix mine with cup-a-soups and you can't even tell it's in there (apart from the obvious thickness difference). When mixed with water, it does taste very much like dried peas (strangely enough!) which is why I tend to go for mixing it with savoury stuff as opposed to the usual fruit mixes...

Ok guys, the only way I've found to make pea protein isolate palatable is to mix in a 40g sachet of flavouring (I favour strawberry) with about 800g pea protein isolate and an entire packet of saccharin tablets (Slimmer are nicer than Sweetex, less of an aftertaste). You have to crush the saccharin tablets up really small, then add them to the tub with your pea protein & flavouring, put the lid on and shake the powder well. Then you can just scoop it out as desired like flavoured whey. It doesn't taste as nice whey, but all forms of dairy give me catarrh & make my skin break out like crazy.

Drinking it unflavoured tastes DISGUSTING!!!! Puke up gross!!! But if you add one sachet MP strawberry flavour & an entire packet of saccharin crushed up really tabs to about 750g dry pea protein powder, shake it up in a tub until it's all mixed together, it becomes palatable. Not delicious like a whey shake but dairy aggravates my acne & gives me cattargh which I can't be doing with. So that's my tip, done this way it ain't so bad.

First time I've ever tried this and I have to be honest - it's vile. I tried mixing it with fruit juices to no avail, nothing masks the smell or the taste. I'm going to try mixing it into some form of cookie/brownie because well, I've got 2.5Kg of the stuff and I'd be amazed if I can find a way to drink it. To those who find a way to drink it purely for the protein and their own frugality, I applaud you. For anyone considering buying it, stick to brown rice concentrate.

It goes down better if you don't try to make it into a sweet shake. I mix to a paste with cold water in a cup, top up from the kettle, then stir in a small amount of low-salt vegetable bouillon. It tastes just like pea cup-a-soup - delicious!

OK. \n\nI come from the mindset that if a certain food is great for my body and it can help me build myself up, I generally don't care what it tastes like - I'll mix it with some water and down it within 2 seconds. \n\nI used to do this is raw tuna + water and it was fine. Same with unflavoured whey. \n\nAnd I thought most of the reviewers here were just wimps for not bearing a healthy supplement for just a few seconds while drinking it. \n\nThis pea protein, however, is absolutely disgusting. It's not a taste that I can zone out, it has a physiological effect that gets me very close to vomiting. \n\nI've tried mixing it with cocoa powder, but I'd need too much of it to mask the pea protein taste and in the long run it's too expensive to do this. \n\nI've also tried blending it with two (about 15-20cm) fully ripe bananas which DOES help immensely, but I need to take it straight with just water.\n\nSo now I've managed to drink this in water without it effecting my vomit response too much. The trick is to mix it with cold water (icy water would be perfect, but isn't optimal as its potential to hydrate is lowered) and drink it without the liquid making contact with my tongue. \n\nYou know when you take a sip of your friend's drink without "mouthing it"? Drink it like that. \n\nThe mixability is excellent, which is why you can mix this in cold water without any lumps.

No problems with digestion. Will be buying more.\nOf course it would be nice to drink a protein shake that tastes of a children's milkshake but this is not what we are buying.\nI wouldn't personally add juice or some sort of flavourng, I think it makes it worse actually. Best way to drink it is with water and just imagine you have some medical condition and you need to drink this to cure your illness. It works for me!

Being able to consume anything is luxury for me as I am a Celiac. I can't eat casein either. Can't have soy milk either. Just got this.\n\nI put a teaspoon in mouth and chewed, no real taste, just chalky.\nMixed with OJ and water, the taste seemed to intensify, not very nice, a bit like drinking dirt I suppose. I am not bothered about taste on anything anymore, if your like me you would understand what I mean. Will post another review once I see what happens with this (digestion). So far all ok, and if I have no "issues" with this stuff, then I will end up buying more.

It tastes awful when mixed with water - it has a kind of \"intensely bland\" flavour that's very offputting. However, you can mix it with vegetables in a stew or soup and it goes surprisingly well. The best things I've found to mix it with are ketchup, marmite and strong spices.

Like milk protein it tastes awful the first time (unflavoured/unsweetened). But the second time is got used to it, the natural flavour is exactly like chestnut. It's easier to mix than milk protein (less froth), 20% cheaper and better tasting, can be used in sauces and soups because it's not sweet.

Really good for vegans if you're not fond of soya protein! This powder mixes very well (i take it just with water). I've always found the taste, even though i ordered it flavoured as Banana, to be pretty horrible, so i would definitely recommend flavouring it with something strong! At the price they have it on here, you can't go wrong!

Ok so I've only had a couple of shakes so far thus I can't say how good it is for recovery. Apart from that it seems to mix ok but you have to use some tactics or it'll end up lumpy. Easiest to use a blender but its a hassle cleaning it. The taste isn't exactly nice but its about mind over matter. Its just pea powder after all, nothing bad in there, tastes quite nutty like somone else said. This is all I can use since I don't seem to tolorate any other powders well so fingers crossed.

Only powder left for me to use so I'm very happy.

im not a big fan of peas, but i thought i would give this a try, how bad can it be? thats what i thought, when i first opened this i knew it wasnt going to be the best tasting so i took it to the gym with me, and after mywork out i filled it with water and started to drink it, i somehow managedd to get half way, and i was forced to stop in fear of being sick on the spot, i thought it must of been a heavy workout, so i tried again that night, and the same thing happened. the next day i left my friend try it, he added water and mixed it, he tasted it so did i, we both agreed it is TRUELY TERRIBLE! so we added orange juice, some of the taste went anyway, he manage to finish it, and sure enough under 40seconds later he was being sick in my bathroom! if you think you wont like you then you wont, trust me pleaasse, i have only got 1kg so i was lucky not to for got more, which i wont be, offical g rating of 0gs, taste is seriously 0/5

The reviewer who described this powder as 'intensely bland' was spot on. But I don't understand those who say it tastes 'nasty'. True, I don't think it is something you can mix with water and drink, like, say whey powder. But it IS a good additive to other dishes and it doesn't overwhelm the taste of the food.\r\n\r\nI bought an unflavoured batch and have so far found it is a good additive/protein boost in curries, casseroles and even when a large teasponnful is stirred into a can of those healthy eating baked beans. Experiment, people!

I read these reviews, but thought they must be overexaggerated, and seeing as I have a strong stomach, decided to give pea protein a go. WHAT A MISTAKE! I've tried every other animal-free protein going and believe me, pea protein tastes like sh*t! Far worse than anything I've ever tasted. Even as part of a protein shake containing banana, milk, peanut butter etc, the taste still dominates. I've resorted to downing this stuff with breath held now and can't wait til my batch is finished and I can get some rice or soya that doesn't make me wanna throw up every day.

I have been told that it's best to consume a 4:1 carb:protein ratio mix within half an hour of completing a running session, then again within the next two hours. This protein mixed with pure fruit juice is a healthy and convenient way to do this. \r\n\r\nIt has a very neutral taste so works well with orange juice. Compared with Brown Protein isolate it mixes much more easily and the taste when mixed with water is far more tolerable.\r\n\r\nI would recommend this to anyone seeking a cheap dairy-free protein. Don't be tempted to save a few quid and get the rice stuff - like me you'll soon regret it.\r\n\r\n

Maybe it has changed since the earlier reviews, but I just bought a kg as my Rice protein had run out and have about 18 grams in about 500mls of warm water. It mixes very easily, just a brief stir with a desert spoon does it. To me the taste mildly reminiscent of peas and is OK enough to not be a problem to take at all, better than dairy anything. I've always found dairy products taste between not pleasant to quite horrible, be it milks, cheeses, or butter, especially the after tastes that's the really bad part where the bad taste just gets worse and lingers. The pea protein, mixed in water, it's consistency is very smooth indeed, milk like. Different to the Rice protein which had a bit of a texture. Once a day I also mix hemp protein, about 15 to 20g, in with the pea protein and warm water and stir. The hemp protein has to me a somewhat hard to tolerate flavour. I guess you just have to try it as clearly each different person has their particular taste likes and dislikes.

This stuff didn't taste half as bad as most below are stating, I mean, yeah, it's not the greatest taste in the world, but then again, which protein shakes are?\n\nI bought some berry blast flavoring to go with and it completely masks the taste, as does your local brand squash.\n\nthe powder mixes quite well too, not the gritty texture like you get with some other proteins.\n\nThe only real downside to it being is that it's not a "complete" protein, but then again, that's not MP's fault... it's the peas, and all you gotta do is buy the brown rice isolate together with this and you're sorted!

OK so I've been consuming PPI for a few months now. Been through 5kg or so, so hopefully in a good position to leave an honest review. \n\nThe first few times you drink it, yes it's not that great. Especially if you're used to Whey. To me it doesn't really taste of peas. It's a light brown colour so presume it's made from chick peas. Quite a neutral taste once you get over the initial change. So neutral in fact that I now use it unflavoured on my cereal every morning. \nIt's also going to taste a little bit grainy if you're used to milk based proteins, but no where near as rough on the throat as brown rice protein or hemp protein.\n\nWhen I have it as a drinking shake (pre workout/post workout) I flavour it with a large squeeze of honey (pre shake) then next (post shake) some of the MP Chocolate flavouring. Someone mentioned in another review about it causing stomach upset. Personally when consuming 3 large scoops a day (on training days) I've not had a problem. The same can't be said for large quantities of brown rice/hemp.\n\nPerformance: This is a tricky one since there's so many variables. I think a mix of 75% brown rice and 25% hemp protein worked best for me, gains wise. I had to search for an alternative when brown rice went off the market and this has been the next best thing (milk allergy). Noticed that it's finally coming back in to stock soon (well done MP!) so might vary my intake between the two going forward.

soya protein was my powder of choice due to me being lactose tolerant but soya eaten in great quantity has so many health disadvantages, so i was looking at an alternative brown rice protein is no longer available and i bought some organic hemp seed protein, the flavor is just over powering for me and the high cost is off putting. i have been usiong pea protein for the past two weeks i blend three scoops with 100g of oats, one banana and a scoop of maltdextrin. i added two tablespoons of peanut butter for taste as someone mentioned in a previous review thanks, i quite like the taste just tastes of peanut butter no way would i classify the powder as rank but i do find a food blender is a must, you cannot mix these powders properly in a shaker this is the first time in a whilwe i have actually felt a difference with this powder the amino acid and protein content is ace and so is the price. highly recommended

This is the protein shake mix that I use and I quite like it:\n\n1 scoop pea protein\n2 scoops waxy maize starch\n1 tablespoon of natural peanut butter\n500ml milk\n3 teaspoons of nesquick chocolate milk mix\n\nI find that this tastes ok. It has take a little getting used to, but I think the addition of the chocolate milk mix really helps.\n\nIt is quite a lot of calories though, around 800 I think. I use it as a pre/during/post workout shake, since I workout in the morning and can't eat enough for breakfast to get my energy levels up before my workout.

As in the "When Harry met Sally" scene, where she fakes orgasm andthe old lady looking on says, "I'll have what she's having". That was how I felt on my first taste of pea protein isolate. It says it has a neutral taste, perhaps that is why some people find it disappointing, because actually it tastes intensely of peas, and I love peas. It's a real pea hit, and I drink it mixed with Evian. To me it doesn't need anything else. Since I'm using it as part of a weight loss diet that is a plus for me, that I don't need to mix it with more calories. I can just mix it up to meet any deficit as an almost insignificant addition, calorie-wise. And as I said, I love the taste. It isn't neutral, it tastes of peas, and it's delicious. Good and sharp.

It's seriously not that bad, I think it's more of a state of mind, if you drink it thinking "eurgh this is pea powder", then you're not gonna like it.\n\nBut, it actually tastes quite nutty, I find that if i mix one scoop with about a pint of water, you just end up with some nutty tasting water, not disgusting at all.\n\nLast night I blended it up with some apple juice, oats and nuts/seeds, tasted alright.\n\nTaste wise, I'd say it's on a par with soya protein.

In addition to me previous comments. I had been using soya protien for months and had seen very few results with it. I recently got a tub of this and a tub of the Brown rice protien. The results are astonishing i'm already starting to see growth and i'm lifting heavier weights with each visit to the gym. I wish I had started on this product 6 months ago and not wasted my time on soya protein. As for the taste, yes its not nice but it is bareable (unlike the rice protien which i've only been able to bring myself to drink twice since I bought it) This would have got five stars from me if it wasn't for the taste.

Wow, what a total waste of a tenner. After reading the other very mixed reviews I made the mistake of getting this, thinking people were just making a fuss over the taste. I tried on its own, with orange, and even with tomato juice and tobasco (most successful). Even this didn't mask the taste - seriously, IT TASTES LIKE DEATH, and though very mixable, for some reason the powder sticks to every surface of your mouth and the hideous taste lingers. Full on gross, DONT BUY IT!!!\n\nThankfully I got plenty of raspberry whey too get by (YUM)

As far as pea proteins go, this is pretty good. It mixes pretty well, and shockingly, the resealing zipper on the pouch actually works. As in, it does actually reseal pretty much perfect.\n\nTaste is...well. Its a pea protein. Mercifully it mixes pretty well even at the recommended dose, so a dash of orange juice masks the taste pretty effectively.\n\nI am using it as part of a recovery shake due to massively increasing my workload. It is much better than having nothing to prevent the next day aches.\n\nBasic opinion. If you are not liking whey, or are restricted in what you can take, or just want something a bit different, this is definetly a good option. Just be prepared to add a bit of something to make it easier to drink.

If you've ever had Chinese herbal medicine where you boil up a bag of what looks like woodland scrapings, then drink the juice, that's what this stuff is like, mixed with the 'plasticy' flavour of the bag. Retch-worthy.\nAso, if you leave it for more than 10 minutes it sets, like jelly, so it's a case of hold your nose and get it down quick.\nI'm going to finish it to see what it's results are like (I've paid for it after all), but if they're anything less than stunning I'm going to stick to the soya stuff.\n\n

Mix it with passion fruit juice if you can get it..that way it "almost" masks the flavour and is quite good. I also grind up nuts and use the pea protein like flour to make it into crackers which I bake till crispy in the oven. Topped with hummus and tomato they are really quite tasty and the nuts give them an even better amino profile )\nFailing this, you could try mixing them with red grape juice which they sell in morrisons and is the next best thing, but not as good as the passion fruit.

Saw the various reviews here and were a bit worried it would taste bad but thought it couldnt be that bad. Unfortunately it is. I usually have 150 - 200 mls of water mixed with a scoop and drink it right down but the pea protein is very loopy and requires much more liquid - just makin it longer to drink!!! After trying for 5 days to give it a valiant effort I have re-ordered the whey protein isolate. It really is quite unpalatable.

Plus the cocoa powder doesn't contain sugar. mp choc flavour works same but is more expensive than the regular cocoa powder.
